Taco Bell will sell a vegan version of its popular Crunchwrap, made with plant-based beef and cheese, in three U.S. cities for a limited time, it said Wednesday. Starting Thursday, customers in Los Angeles, New York and Orlando will be able to order the Vegan Crunchwrap. Vegetarians were also among the fans who successfully pushed Taco Bell to bring back its cult-favorite Mexican Pizza. Taco Bell used pea protein and soy to make the vegan beef in the new Crunchwrap. For the vegan blanco sauce and vegan nacho sauce, Taco Bell used soy as the main base.

Beyond Meat is launching a steak substitute in grocery stores on Monday. Amid the chaos, Beyond and Yum Brands' Taco Bell started testing meatless carne asada using its Beyond Steak product at restaurants in Dayton, Ohio. The Beyond Steak that will be sold in grocery stores comes packaged in bite-sized pieces. In the second quarter, Beyond reported U.S. grocery sales rose just 2.2% while restaurant revenue was off 2.4%. This year, shares of the company have lost 80% of their value, shrinking its market value to $821 million.

Companies like Beyond Meat, rival Impossible and plant-based milk producer Oatly are still doing big deals with supermarket chains and restaurants to get their products on store shelves and menus. But in the company’s most recent earnings call, Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown conceded that the company (and the industry) faces challenges. Inflation is a problem for plant-based food biz too“We went from a pandemic into record inflation,” Brown said. “After years of growth, plant-based meat sales in the United States are stagnating,” said consulting firm Deloitte in a recent report. So there is nothing fake about Wall Street’s concerns regarding the big drop in demand for “fake” meat and milk.
Taco Bell will test meatless carne asada made with Beyond Meat at dozens of its restaurants in Dayton, Ohio, starting next month. Around that time, Taco Bell promised to test a menu item made with Beyond, but it took longer than expected to create a carne asada alternative that satisfied Taco Bell, Bloomberg reported in December. Starting Oct. 13, participating Taco Bell locations will sell the steak substitute for a limited time at the same price as its existing carne asada. Taco Bell plans to feature Beyond Carne Asada in its quesadilla, but customers can swap in the meat alternative for other orders as well. The test is meant to help Taco Bell measure the demand for Beyond Carne Asada.
Select Taco Bell locations in Ohio will soon feature Beyond Meat carne asada on its menus starting Oct. 13. Developed in collaboration with Beyond Meat, the carne asada will debut in select locations in Dayton, Ohio for a limited time beginning on October 13. In December, Bloomberg reported the collaboration was taking longer than expected as the team worked to make a meat alternative that satisfied Taco Bell. The Mexican-inspired chain has been testing an array of plant-based protein including its own made from soy and pea protein at participating locations in Alabama. Although the partnership with Beyond Meat has been in the works for years, this announcement comes amid a tumultuous time for the plant-based meat company.
